Fight! If you haven't noticed, billsaysthis posted an article about Justine Henin-Hardin's recent US Open win, and kinda made a funny reference to the writer. Then the writer showed up. I thought it was some prankster. But now it looks legit. Whoo.

Thanks for posting this, wc. I missed it the first time around. Big Bad Billy. Ha! I love that some author would get all pissy about what some internet nerd thinks of one of his columns (no offense, Big Bad Billy - I'm one too). I'm going after Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe next.

Maybe we can all chip in and buy Ossian Shine an extra layer of skin. Good thing he wasn't in our fantasy baseball league!

How long until the site gets sued for slander and libel? Hoo-hah! We need to say some funny shit about Rush Limbaugh in here. Oh wait ...

Sounds like a good idea, pick a writer a week to piss off and see if he responds.

From now on, whenever someone joins SportsFilter to cry a river about our mistreatment of them, we should state that they are taking a Shine to us. My compliments, Bill.

yerfatma, i think it's time you incur the wrath of Shaughnessy. Post something!

That bonehead Larry Brooks from the New York post could use an internet nerd smackdown, too.

At my Carolina Hurricanes web hang out, we had a bit of a throwdown with Lindsey Berra of ESPN. She wrote an article about the 'Canes that had some pretty idiotic mistakes in it, we busted her on it, and she got pissy with us in the forum. However, it all ended up in one big lovefest, which in itself was kinda funny.

we definitely need a 'best brawls' section.

Let Ossy play it up, our links are probably fronting some nice visitation numbers for his new book. Praise God he doesn't continue to use lines like:"Her sublime God-given talent is backed by a steely temperament and a deep determination." in every other paragraph and or chapter.
Say! This will be the FIRST SpoFi Reading List/Drinking Game(I think)!
Everyone read Ossy's book, and for every tired, drawn-out, or clichéd phrase take a shot!
We'll call it Billy Shine instead of moonshine! Cause it gets you drunk faster!

posted by lilnemo at 02:51 PM on September 12, 2003

Lilnemo, there is no chuffin way I am parting with hard earned English coin for that book.

posted by Fat Buddha at 02:54 PM on September 12, 2003

Thats what libraries are for.

posted by lilnemo at 02:55 PM on September 12, 2003

Though, having thought about it, getting drunk in a library isn't all that great an idea either.

posted by lilnemo at 02:55 PM on September 12, 2003

lilnemo, apparently you've never tried that. I highly recommend it. And really, is his writing all that terrible? Granted his real life tennis experience is what got him the job, but the read ain't all that bad. (spoken like a true non-purist)

posted by garfield at 03:08 PM on September 12, 2003

Well, not having read the book I am unqualified to comment, but I have to say Big Bad Billy has it about right. That report is drivel, but fair play to the bloke for getting paid for writing drivel; I wish I could.

You'd have to hit the CHB over the head with a shovel to get his attention amongst all the mud slung his way, jerseygirl.

But it is fun, someone needs to send him a chill pill. Anyway, I vote for a Skip Bayless pile-on. He writes for the Mercury News now but has done long stints in Dallas and Chicago so probably a few of you have read his spew.

posted by billsaysthis at 06:34 PM on September 12, 2003

If we're going to bother with anyone outside of the Boston market, that moron from Denver who shows up on Max Keeble's Big Waste of Time before PTL, Woody Paige, gets my vote. He sounds like the Rocky Mountain air is too thin to breathe. Which I hope it becomes.

I have a suggestion: since WC doesn't like us anymore and won't do interviews and billsaysthis has been dying to be interviewed, how about we recruit the big O to fill the void and interview bill? We could probaly get the whole thing on Pay-Per-View which would help raise money for all the future lawsuits. "His sublime God-given talent is backed by a steely broad-band connection and a deep vocabulary"

posted by kloeprich at 09:22 AM on September 13, 2003

Oh, you teaser. I'd gladly interview bill. Altho, I think rcade is next. If we did get O to Shine on bill, however, I'd want it to be live, face to face, no holds barred, CAGE MATCH!

My sublime God-given trousers are packed with a steely torpedo and a deep degeneration.

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:36 PM on September 13, 2003

Samsonov, Here is the link to that thread. However, I'll warn everyone right now, some troll posts got deleted and it rather quickly degenerates into silliness, so much of that thread may not make sense. Lindsay Berra's (she's Yogi Berra's granddaughter as it turns out) name in this thread is something like Uncleangelo. In her ESPN.com article, she makes some rather glaring mistakes and we called her on it and labled her an idiot. She kinda deserved it because she was writing for a well known and rather well respected sport news website. We've had some other entertaining run-ins with other writers from other well known publications, but those happened in the old incarnation of FanHome and thus are irretrievable. One thing people must understand about us 'Canes fans; our knees jerk hard 'n fast from years of of being dumped on by journalists and other hockey fans. You write something bad about us and/or our team and make it rather obvious that you didn't do your homework, we'll quickly let you know how we feel about it.

posted by NoMich at 02:00 AM on September 14, 2003

Oh yeah, ESPN.com corrected the errors in Lindsay's article, but there's no mention of editing. Wuz up wit dat?

Well folks, as much fun as this has undoubtedly been, all good things must come to an end... it's been a laugh but I'm afraid that my God-given light-heartedness and talent for discourse has been eroded by increasing boredom and a new assignment so I'll have to draw a line under this one now... I'll be escaping the European winter for Australian sun in a couple of months to entertain you all with tales from Perth, Kooyong and Melbourne Park. Hope you can wait. xxx
