So, it's safe to say that there are others who are hoping for a violent Laker's implosion? Not just me?

I remember Vince Carter doing a tour of China after his first big rehab stint. Do you think that extra vote popularity carries over on all of the "Yao Ming + whoever" ballots?

The Mavericks hopefully have something else up their sleeve. Adding Antoine Walker to this team is not an improvement. The only way I can justify it if it was purely for salary cap reasons. In LaFrentz's defense, I think he would be a good fit as an Eastern conference center. He got a bad rep in Dallas as a hack, but I think that was just the end result of bad perimeter defenders. Opposing players would beat their man, he would get funneled to Raef, and Raef would commit the foul. Currently, the Mavs lineup looks something like this: PG: Nash / Best / Delk SG: Finley / Howard / Abdul-Wahed SF: Jameson / Najera PF: Nowitzki / Walker C: Fortson / Bradley The center spot was our weakest link, so why did Dallas just try to upgrade it's most dominant position? No clue. Hopefully, there is something else in the works.

Davis has made the win irrelevant. Frankly, it would have been a pretty big deal for Cleveland to beat Utah (or anyone), but all we're talking about is Davis.
A high-numbers player on a horrifically bad team doesn't mean much. He touts himself as the best dunker in the league, but Harold Minor used to be the best dunker in the league, and where is he now?

I'm just thrilled Mark Cuban didn't make a deal.
Does this make Milwaukee major contenders now? No. Seattle a contender? No.

I agree with the sentiments that it seems odd to extend the first round in the middle of the season.
As a Mavs fan, I'm already scared of LA sneaking in as the 8th seed. I can't decide if this makes things better or worse for the Mavs. I never thought I would say this, but go Rockets/Jazz/Suns/Timberwolves!

How much of the punishment do you think was enacted because they couldn't do anything about the Hummer he received for his 18th birthday? Do you think this suspension was in part backlash for that event?
Also, LeBron's not fooling anyone with this jerseys for good grades crap. He said he posed for some pictures for the store. Did he see any photos of the unathletic kids in the band getting their free jerseys for having good grades? Terrible.
Also, I didn't see the interview, but if Deion let him make the statement about how he thought that the jerseys were a reward for good grades without following up, he should never be allowed to perform (or give) an interview again. Does anyone know of a transcript for the interview? I'd be curious.

As much as it hurts me to say it (Dallas-ite), Webber deserves it so far. Nash is the MVP of the Mavericks, in my opinion, though. Without him, their offense wouldn't stand a chance.

As a Dallas-ite, it's been amazing to watch how Cuban has turned the team around. Now that he's got a (relatively) set lineup, he is allowing them to grow together.
His willingness to let this group of players mature at their own pace is impressive. When he was tinkering early, the grumbling doubt in Dallas was that he'd never be satisfied. He seems to be relatively calm this year, which is a great sign.
You also must give him praise for surrounding his stars with capable role players. If LA was as willing as Cuban is to pay the luxury tax, how many championships do you think they would have if they were to surround Shaq and Kobe with a handful of decent players?

Speaking to the popularity of Vince Carter, I was reminded that he did an exhibition tour in China this summer to packed gyms. He could be picking up all of the extras from the Yao Ming Chinese voting landslide.
It would be interesting if we could get a breakdown of voting by language of ballot.

I'm not too worried about them adding a role player, but I'd hate to see a big trade. I admit they need a big man, but who would help them at this point?
Theo Ratliff is probably available, but he's got health problems. Kelvin Cato might be out there as well, but he's pretty young/raw. The last thing they need is some locker-room distractions, so Charles Oakley is out. Any other ideas?

I fell asleep when the Mavs were up by 28 and woke up to hear ESPN commentators talking about one of the greatest comebacks ever. Talk about a nightmare.

I personally think the thing with Darko Milicic has been blown out of proportion. The Mavericks weren't there to scout him. The kid is already going to be one of the top three picks in the upcoming draft (I should say pick 2 or 3), so the Mavs don't really stand a chance of getting him, no matter what.
He's been playing professionally for a few years, hasn't he? Couldn't the Mavs brass just buy a seat in the bleachers like everyone else? Is that a violation?
I see why the rule is in place, but this seems like a silly enforcement of it.

Update: Doesn't sound like KG's going anywhere. Reports say his contract will be extended. He's eligable for a four year, $136M dollar extension.
Will KG's legacy be that of sinking the franchise in Minnesota?
posted by jmevius at 02:38 PM on October 26, 2002
I agree. It doesn't seem there are too many teams that could take KG on. Paul Allen's deep pockets might be one of three places that would be willing to dip that deep into the wallet.
Bonzi could have been traded for a good PG and they've got a good team.

If the decision is made to trade KG (which I think would be very difficult), where could he go? As a Mavs fan, I think the idea of a KG for Nash / Finley / LaFrentz deal is silly (but I would love to see Garnett and Nowitzki play together).
I don't think you could get equal value except for Shaq, but I doubt LA would return calls. What team has the firepower to pull off the deal? Where would you try to trade KG if it was you?

As a Mavericks fan, I was disappointed they couldn't work out a deal to at least get a draft pick for Wang. I didn't mind them letting him go, though.

I second that sentiment of 'Screw Him'. Living in Dallas, I can attest to the amount of disgust he generated years ago by running back to the star after he scored. George Teague was treated like a hero around here for quite awhile after that. Owens and Randy Moss make a great one-two jerk combination.

Pencil in John Stockton and Karl Malone at 1 and 4, respectively. That's a playoff team right there. Who else belongs on the health/injury resistance all-star team?

The curse I was referring to was the every-year promise that Camby was finally healthy and then watching him hobble to the bench.

Has he become too important to the Vikings organization to touch? Can he be disciplined?
Or has the Randy ratio (40% of passes go to Moss, as decided by Tice) made him invincible to criticism?

In other news, again, the Knicks rejected a trade that would have brought Mutumbo to NY.
But don't worry, they're still trying to work out a trade to get Alonzo Mourning. Will they ever just give up?

What about the Mavericks? Does this hurt/help them?
Having Van Exel was good insurance for Nash, but would the Mavs sacrifice that safety net for a real rebounder?

I thought Kurt Thomas would be a good addition and I assumed that Ward was merely a salary-cap throw-in.
Are they both that bad?

I'm having doubts aboiut how Mutombo affects the Nets fast break game. Admittedly, he will average a few more blocks and rebounds, but he's never been the fastest to outlet.
I'm worried he might clog the offense.

I've read they aren't especially interested in keeping him. Attitude could be the only reason I can think of they wouldn't resign him, but since when does Portland care about attitude?
They've had an intense amount of talent come through there, you're right.

I dug around on the internet trying to find a sample Wonderlic, so we could all compare scores.
This was the only one I could find, and it's just a sample. I got seven of nine, so it says I got a 39. I think that might be a little inflated, however.
Anyone else find one we could all play with?

My point exactly!
Do you see this as a turnaround, where now if he has something worth keeping, he will pay up? Or do you think this is just going to be a very good team that he ruins?
posted by jmevius at 11:39 AM on August 01, 2002
That's the point. The Kings/Mavericks series was heartbreaking for me to watch, because the Kings just ran circles around a half-hearted defense.

As positive of a move as this was for the Clippers, do you think Sterling can hold it together? From a team chemistry standpoint, now Miller, Olowokandi, and Brand are going to want/expect maximum or near-max deals in the very near future.
From an owner with a longstanding penchant for thrift, can/will he pay what it takes to maintain this talented core?

Kobe Playing Mind Games?
PF could definitely be Walker. It's harder to pick frontcourt, because if they hog the ball, it's only because someone else gave it to them.. But, give me AI at the point. When he first started in the league, the Sixers only play was: Inbounds/rebound pass to Iverson, get out of the way.
