Assembling the all-stars out of all the stars.: An all time global all-star team will be announced during an IIHF gala in Quebec City when the world championship tournament is held in Canada for the first time next spring.

"If nothing else, it's going to cause some discussion if not arguments," Canadian IIHF executive council member Murray Costello of Ottawa said of the all-star selections. No shit. If they're giving extra weight to international impact (and insisting on at least 10 years' service with the national team), then Gretzky and Tretiak are each a lock. The other four positions are where that debate will come from. (I'd love to see Salming up there, and you could make a real case, but it's a crowded dais.) By their criteria, people like Orr & Howe don't even merit consideration, while half the roster of the Oilers of the 1980s almost automatically makes the short list.

Not so obvious Canadian choices: Ryan Smyth - he's played on 11 different international teams for Canada, and he's come back a champion 5 times Scott Niedermayer - he's won a championship in every international tournament that is available (junior, world championship, World Cup, Olympics)
