The numbers are out: and the Nike swoosh pays just over eleven grand per appearance. At least, that's what Ohio State's new equipment deal with Nike: ...if more than five football players tape over or otherwise block out the Nike logo on their shoes, Nike can take back $11,880 for each shoe, up to a maximum of $59,400.

Interesting. What jumped out at me in that article is that the 7 year, $26MM Nike deal for OSU pales in comparison to the 8 year, $60MM adidas deal for Michigan. I figured Michigan had more cachet (and who knows if this is really an apples for apples comparison), but not that much more. So long as this doesn't have any negative impact in terms of safety or comfort for the players, I don't really have an issue with schools getting money out of corporations like this.

...bonuses for the publicity that comes with success -- including $10,000 for a national championship in football... Does anyone know how that figure compares to the numbers Tressel offers the recruits?

Does a $10,000 bonus for a championship seem small when the penalty for taping over a logo is $11,880 per shoe? The article is somewhat poorly drafted, but I got a sense that the $10,000 was a bonus for the head coach, not the school.

I might be the odd one out here, but I don't look at the shoes anyway, too much other "scenery" to watch. (besides the action on the field.)
