One sweet etching: John Candy, who was part owner of the Toronto Argonauts when they won the Grey Cup in 1991, will finally have his name etched into the trophy as a part of a tribute in the week leading up to the championship game in Toronto this fall.

Thanks for this post. I've been watching with anticipation to see what kind of effort Toronto and the CFL put into the Grey Cup this year. This looks to me like they're off to a heck of a start. The inclusion of John Candy in this does seem fitting as the Grey Cup is much more than just a sporting spectacle--it's an important cultural event in Canada. However, much like the controversy around selling the naming rights for the Cup, I'm wondering if this doesn't open a can of worms. I'm kicking myself for not knowing how/which other owners are etched onto the rings. The article doesn't say whether Gretzky's name will be added as well, or if it is limited to Candy? I'm guessing McNall's name will stay. If they started removing disgraced owners from the Cup, others like Ryckman would surely be in peril too. At any rate, I'm glad to see the CFL and the Grey Cup in the news at this time of year. To me, it's a sign of a good season ahead!

Nice story, thanks for the link, fraze. I don't understand why they are correcting for Candy and not for Gretzky, though. Does Gretzky have to die to get on the cup?

I don't understand why they are correcting for Candy and not for Gretzky, though. Does Gretzky have to die to get on the cup? They are adding both Candy's and Gretzky's name to the Cup, according to cbc.ca.
