If you hit home runs, : your career lasts longer. The paper expresses this in a slightly longer fashion. And made my face hurt. Via kottke.

The abstract may be rewritten as follows: "Power hitters strike out a lot." "Home run hitters drive Cadillacs; singles hitters drive Chevys." This guy went on for 12 pages, using some incredibly arcane formulae, when all he had to do was cite a few statistics. I kept looking for a date of April 1 on the paper. Don't have a lot to do over there in Dover, Fatty?

I fear I might have editorialized too much in the post, but I didn't know what to say. I barely have the intellectual equipment to deal with the paper, much less discuss it intelligently. While the conclusions seem obvious enough, I did find the methods interesting: the concept of purchasing long and small ball attempts, the use of dummy variables, etc. "Amateur" statisticians and the pro ones are coming closer and closer together and it's interesting to see where it will take analysis. As for Dover, I was snowed in. With three cases of beer. So don't fear for my entertainment opportunities.
