"Oh, we had good times.": But as Simmons held that old sepia photo of the 1913 Homestead Grays for those long 20 seconds, he gradually decided that one face did ring a bell. He fixed on it and pointed his weathered hand at the player sitting in the middle row, second from the right. He said nothing as he pointed. Who is that? he was asked. "That's Si Simmons," he said. Really? Was he sure? "Thatís me," he declared. "Oh, we had good times."

Thanks for that jojo. Nice link. I love the ol' timey baseball links. (Psst - Si Simmons used amphetamines.)

(Psst - Si Simmons used amphetamines.) No wonder they had such good times! I tend to like hearing about the old baseball days myself.

Si Simmons used amphetamines Source for that claim, Weedy? Great article. Thanks. Even worth dealing with annoying NYT.

Si Simmons used amphetamines My so-called friends tell me that I'm old enough to have sold the amphetamines to him. Seriously, though, the title says a lot. Playing the game at any level was once thought of as fun. If this article were to be written in another 75 years about a present-day major league player, it would have to be titled "Oh, we made a lot of money." It sounds like Si Simmons truly had some "good, old days".

I'm glad they found him before he died, regardless of how much information he was still able to impart (or what he was on at the time; it was 1913, they were playing for meal money and bus fare, big whoop if he was juicing). And it's excellent that he remembers his baseball years well, and that he's lived a pretty good (not to mention extremely long) life. May we all have that kind of luck. What a really nice article.

Even worth dealing with annoying NYT. Sorry, I even used the free link generator in the locker room.

jojo: no. The link was fine. It's the annoying multimedia ads and the auto-start video. You did nothing wrong. I was just grousing. Sorry.

Good, I have never used that before and was hoping it worked. Thank you.

Source for that claim, Weedy? I looked it up in my gut. And if you look that up, you'll find the truth. That's where the truth lies, right down here in the gut. Do you know you have more nerve endings in your gut than you have in your head? You can look it up. I know some of you are going to say 'I did look it up, and that's not true.' That's 'cause you looked it up in a book. Next time, look it up in your gut.

Well, that's as truthy as anything I've heard all day.

Maybe someone should punch weedy in the gut and ask him how it feels.

Weedy, I looked in my gut, but only found a half-digested pizza and a couple of ulcers. Apparently, the technique takes some practice. Oh, and the post was a cool read. Thanks.

I nominate Weedy for Comment of the Year, Empiricism as Philosophy category.
