World Champions: - The world may not have held its collective breath as Uruguay puffed to a 2-0 win, (youtube highlights), over Egypt in August, but to those in the know, the victory confirmed Uruguay's place as unnoficial World Champions, a title they've held since May.

Two Guardian articles relating to theunofficial 1966 world champions and theunofficial Premiership champions. 2001/02 was a great season for Birmingham City FC in more ways than we initially realised.

At the risk of sounding stentorian and hoity-toity, one finds it impossible to argue with the logic contained in these excellent and illuminating links.

Is Uruguay a strong team? yep, years back they were great champions... beating Egypt 2-0 is not the end.. so should we call Egypt championars when they come to defeat Uruguay?

If Uruguay are still champions at that point then yes, that's the way it works. It's a boxing-style you-beat-the-man-you-are-the man competition. Except Urguay probably won't throw the title in a garbage can rather than face Canada.

I always find this amusing. A few years ago Nigeria was unofficial world champs. If it was only as easy as beating the team that beat the team that beat the team that won.... then my club team would be US champions for beating the team that beat DC United quite a few years ago. Of course the team that ended up beating us was crap. It does make an interesting story though. I enjoyed it.

Sorry, smealey. Should have checked your blog before making a smartarse comment. You're more Roddy Woomble and Roddy Frame than Roddy Stewart.

And because my "Rich Mirer is the worst quarterback ever" comment went over so well, I'll back that up with one that says that Scotland are the best team ever. The Wiki Page fills out more detail.
