Baseball's First All-Star Game: July 06, 1933 at Chicago's Comiskey Park, Baseballs all-star game made its debut with the AL beating the NL 4-2. "We wanted to see the Babe. Sure, he was old and had a big waistline, but that didn't make any difference. We were on the same field as Babe Ruth." - Wild Bill Hallahan
Three Hall of Famers never even made it into the game. I doubt we'll ever see that again. Baseball Almanac is an excellent site, Folkways. To supplement the discussion, check out baseballlibrary.com. Some great stories there, including entries from every All Star Game.

Three Hall of Famers never even made it into the game. I doubt we'll ever see that again. Given the restriction on every team getting a rep in, I'd think it will happen. I guess it depends on how many future HoFers are typically active. If Maddux and Glavine pitch another few years, it should happen. Bagwell, Biggio, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Pedro . . . there's the potential for three of them not to make it, even with the expanded rosters.

Yerfatma: I was referring to HOFers who made the roster but did not play. Not Hall of Famers that weren't named to the teams. The game was played like a real contest in the early years, not just a showcase.

You know what, Stuart, I LIKE YOU. You're not like the other people, here, in the trailer park.

The only real competition associated with the All-Star Game anymore is the HomeRun Derby.

Favorite memory: Pete Rose barrelling over Ray Fosse at home, playing the only way he knew how, hard and hustling.

Favorite memory: Pete Rose barrelling over Ray Fosse at home, playing the only way he knew how, hard and hustling. Oh yeah! The way the game was supposed to be played. My favorite memory is Ripken hitting a homerun in his first at bat of his final All-Star game.

I remember growing up in the late 60's thru the 70's being excited about the all-star game. It meant time with my dad watching our favorite players that even an 8 or 9-year-old kid could vote for. Today for me it has lost some (ok, a lot) of that luster, and from some of the recent posts here on SpoFi I see im not alone. Thoughts? Favorite memories? Good-times, bad-times, I know I’ve had my share… (Led Zeppelin on the brain all of a sudden), sorry.
