Biggest One Day Chase in history: as South Africa run down Australia with one wicket and one ball to spare in the series decider. One of the greatest cricket matches ever.

Probably the best ODI ever if you like big hitting. But which begs the question - how could you possibly lose after scoring 434?

Okay, I don't know a lot about cricket, but 438-434 is a huge number.

Indeed, chico. More analysis here. I wonder if anyone left after the Australian innings, thinking 'there's just no way...'?

What was hilarious was reading all the self-congratulatory prose in the Aussie morning papers, written when they believed that a humiliation was in the offing for South Africa.

One of the best one day matches I've ever been at was at the Wanderers in 1999 [match report here]. The fact that it was so much fun may have had something to do with how much extra booze the rain delays allowed us to drink, but still. This latest game sounds incredible. I didn't see any of it. How bad was the bowling?

From this article in the Guardian: While England were struggling to 112 for five in 51 overs against India, the Australians had made an astonishing 434 for four in their allotted 50 overs... One-day cricket will never be the same again; nor will the nerves of the poor, flayed bowlers. But we anoraks are in ecstasy.

Ricky Ponting also refused his share of the man-of-the-match award, saying it should go to Herschelle Gibbs alone. While this sounds very gentlemanly, it probably demonstrates (along with some of his recent captaincy decisions) that Ponting hasn't got the same killer instinct of his predecessors.

Can all you pig-ignorant yanks who don't want to talk about cricket kindly fuck off and stop shitting in the thread? Or are manners too much to expect?

You should have seen the ones that were deleted.

Can all you pig-ignorant yanks who don't want to talk about cricket kindly fuck off and stop shitting in the thread? Or are manners too much to expect? I think im glad a came in when I did. Missed all the Shitheaded comments from dumb fucks with no business owning a computer. This is one "yank" that has really enjoyed learning about this truely bizzar (to me) game. Been following owlhouse's posts since I got here. back to your regularly schedual program.

Can all you pig-ignorant yanks who don't want to talk about cricket kindly fuck off and stop shitting in the thread? Or are manners too much to expect? Were there deleted posts? I didn't see much pig ignorance in play up there. Nor a great deal of shitting. I admire Ponting's stance. I suspect if anything his magnanimity might have been even more annoying for the boks or the pansies or whatever they have to call themselves these days. I don't know that he lacks a killer instinct - I think he is just prone to moments of frozen panic every so often.

Like deciding to bowl at Edgbaston? How can you panic at winning a coin toss? :-)

When I went to England over the summer all that was on TV was some rugby, a little soccer, way to much big brother, and cricket. I'll have to say that cricket was my favorite to watch (though rugby was nice too). Since I play baseball, I guess I have more inclination to enjoy cricket and while I was there I figured out the rules (somewhat). While I still think baseball is a better game, that is a biased opinion and I am another "yank" who enjoys watching/learning cricket.

Were there deleted posts? I didn't see much pig ignorance in play up there. Nor a great deal of shitting. I deleted about 5 joking post in a row that had nothing to do with the post or even the sport, plus the ever insightful "why is this here" comment. A joke here or there is fine, when they take over the thread it's a problem.

Love your work - so effectively carried out, they didn't even spoil my enjoyment of the thread!
