To Hate Like This is to Be Happy Forever: Slate reviews Will Blythe's book about the most heated rivalry in college basketball. Excerpts: one, two, three, four, five; audio interview.
If you can't get enough of the Duke-UNC rivalry, ESPN is launching ESPNU Full Circle: North Carolina at Duke, where every one of ESPN's collection of multimedia platforms will have programming about tomorrow night's game.

There's a copy somewhere between Amazon and me as I type. As a Duke grad I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be able to finish it without throwing it across the room. Blythe apparently devotes some time to the online aspect of the rivalry - namely DBR and IC (can't link to that drivel). And I can hardly sit still thinking about tomorrow's game.

Oh my, for the first time in my lifetime of watching Duke/Carolina games, I think I'm finally sick of the hype that espn is giving it this year.

Yes, too much hype by far... and I say that as a Carolina basketball obsessive. All I want for Christmas is a muzzle for Dick Vitale.

As I will be watching the game in Cameron, I have to admit I'm not too worried about the hype. Even Hansbrough's only good offensive move, hooking, won't help Carolina tomorrow, provided the refs don't give random fouls to any Duke player who happens to be near a play close to the basket like they did against FSU. Check out the stats: around 30 free throws for Johnson and Thornton, with only 7 total shooting fouls for Duke. Thats pretty much bullcrap. Anyways, go Duke.

Yeah, poor Duke, they never get the calls.

FSU came out playing a lot harder than Duke. You can ask anyone who knows basketball and they will tell you that the more aggressive team will, more often than not, get the calls.

who honestly cares about either of the teams.yes they are consistently top raked teams. yes they are both basketball icons with the players they produce, but , seriously, its only one game!! the media is putting to much into it. its not for the national championship yet is it?

and yes, if miami paid their players like unc or duke they would have a great program as well

You mean if they paid their basketball players? (uh football???)

You're shittin' me? Some guy named Blythe wrote a book about that and somebody published it? Is this the Onion, or what?

and yes, if miami paid their players like unc or duke they would have a great program as well And if Miami offered their players the education that Duke or UNC does, they wouldn't turn out nearly as many idiots. See: Winslow, Kellen Jr.; Shockey, Jeremy; Irvin, Michael, et al.

Yeah, I admit it. Duke and UNC are institutions that run far dirtier programs than the University of Miami. If only the Tobacco Road teams had such a great academic track record as "the U." And since of all the 40 foul shots that FSU got in that game, only 15 came off shooting fouls, either budpatient has no clue about basketball at all, or else just didnt watch the game. In either case he is just making himself look like an idiot with expert analysis like that.

Obviously you never played ball before because the fouls I was reffering to are the ones that come from getting to the ball first. (IE. Not shooting fouls!) Maybe you should watch a little more basketball before commenting on it. Or maybe you should try playing it. No, not on your PS2, outside with other people!

12 hours later I'm still pretty shocked that Duke were up 13-2 and ended up losing. Despite their record, if they don't win the ACC tournament does this mean they'll drop to a 2 seed?

I like UNC, but not as much as this post makes it seem. I enjoyed the full title of the book: To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever: A Thoroughly Obsessive, Intermittently Uplifting, and Occasionally Unbiased Account of the Duke-North Carolina Basketball Rivalry.
