The fight for John Obi Mikel.: Chelsea and Manchester United are in a struggle over a talented Nigerian 18 year old that involves a youth contract in Norway, alleged "hijackings", "kidnappings", and "removals to a 'safe hotel'". More from the Times UK. Sickening. (via the Sports Economist)

This was all so predictable. Chelsea are a loose cannon when it comes to transfer dealings and seem to consider themselves immune to the rules by which other teams have to abide. Man U are no better, if a little less wealthy nowadays, and have been reprimanded and punished in the past for "poaching" young talent from smaller teams. The person you have to feel sorry for is young Mikel Obi, who has been caught in the financial machinations of two of the world's footballing giants. What a dreadful situation for an 18 year old to find himself in.

"Dreadful situation for an 18 year old to find himself in", eh, Squealy? The $75,000 weekly salary he'll soon receive might alleviate some of his woes, poor lamb!

More info can be found at the Wikipedia entry on Mikel. Sadly, unless some major reforms are put in place, I fear stories like this may become commonplace in the future.
