Skiing the streets of San Francisco.: Tons of snow on Fillmore today, ski jumping, loud music. Skiers stoked. Residents not. Anybody see this? Video?

Video? Yeah. This article, dateline today, has links to a vid and pix of the construction. Nothing yet of anyone going off the kicker, but I'm sure it'll be there. I'm curious to see how they managed the runout...

This is five blocks from my apartment. I hope they clean up the mess before I get home.

8 pm, Mosely said. Whether they'll have all the trucks and such outta there is the real question.

Good god. I hope they put some good netting and pads (?) before these concrete dividers.

i dunno, aren't those concrete dividers part of the jump? before they built it? that is was the caption seems to suggest and the hill above it looks like the approach to the jump, being near the top of the hill and all.

It looks like they built the kicker so that the lip of the jump was right at the uphill side of the cross street -- then the landing and runout was on the other side of the intersection. It's not quite like the ideal big air setup, where the runout runs into a flat area -- I bet there were some exciting landings. Hope they get some vid up... I found another interesting link: apparently the Norwegian consulate used the occasion to put on an exhibition of "Norwegian history, culture and traditions." They were gonna have a couple of athletes take part, too, but because of the ruckus with the permit and the associated delay, that didn't happen. I dunno exactly what that would have looked like, but it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for them to have sent some of them dudes and dudettes from the Lillehammer Olympics opening ceremonies to do some yumpin' on telemark skis in traditional costume. That was, without a doubt, the most extremely, completely, banana-whackies opening ceremony ever (and sorry, the vid doesn't show the tele skiers, only the lunatic who brought the Olympic flame in by ski jumping in the dark).

Photos here. No vid yet. Apparently it was Fillmore and Vallejo.

Those photos with the ocean in the background are pretty fantastic.
