Arsenal go for a makeover.: I know there was a valid reason to change their crest (the old one could not be copyrighted, apparently) but what do you think of the new design? Personally I can't fathom how it took a team of consultants so long to come up with something like that. I would be pretty annoyed if my club did something similar.

I can't think of any reason to do this other than royalties. Personally, the new arsenal logo looks cheap compared to the old one. I love teams (regardless of sport) that cling to tradition.

A couple of other reasons come to mind: modernization and ease of reproduction. The old crest is busy and complicated. I like clinging to tradition, too, ttrendel (My hometown heroes are the Montreal Canadiens, who haven't changed their logo in 50-odd years), but sometimes an update is neccessary, and I think that this might be one of those times.

I was talking to a couple of the Arsenal fans at work, and they reckon it's because the old one was easy to steal by taking detail out, whereas to steal the new one you would have to add detail, which would make it easier to sue for breach of copyright. Not sure if that makes any sense, but I do know that the new logo is apparently too "European" for most people's liking. Still, I don't really mind in the slightest, as long as no-one messes with the Liver bird ...

It does lack a little of the majesty of the old symbol. The new one looks a little too slick for my tastes. But I suppose with corporate sponsorship logos as dominant as they are lately, we should be glad it doesn't say DREAMCAST in GIANT LETTERS on the logo. My roots sadly make me a Palace fan. When I wear my Palace jersey here in sunny California, most people think it's a TDK shirt, owing to the truly massive TDK logo.

Heh, I can relate. At least your roots don't make you a Southend United fan (shrimpers). Can you say "middle of division 3"?. And I can't even recognize the sponsor. I'd like to root for ManU, as that's where my grandparents are from, but that just feel wrong. Like rooting for the Yankees.

I support Hereford United first and Liverpool second (Hereford never get on the telly much). I don't see a problem with this.

sauril! How can you be down on Southend United when they have the coolest mascot ever in any sport. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Sammy The Shrimp. *sigh* I guess my home-town "Cyberian Husky", mascot of the San Jose Earthquakes, pales by comparison.

I'm not down on them, really (honest, Sammy notwithstanding ;). But the only way I can follow them from all the way over here (Calgary, that is) is via scores... It's hard enough to get Premiership games without paying through the nose for FoxSportsWorld, only available on tier 73 (or whatever) on the local cable. My comment re: ManU was not so much me feeling guilty about supporting another team as much as me feeling guilty supporting the perpetual overdog. Not in my nature. "Cyberian Husky"? That's a terrible pun. I love it.
