GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!: Camara scores an incredible goal off the post in the 104th minute of this tense and well-played 2-1 Senegal win over Sweden (he scored both goals for Senegal in this game). Now this was an exciting match! Senegal faces either Japan or Turkey next, pending the outcome of that match- who should they expect to face? How far can they really go?

I just love watchin the senegalese do their co-ordinated dance/victory celebration. I left a hapennin party here in SF to watch the match. Glad i did. So many close calls on either side but Senegal played the better game and deserved their win. They are stylish players and seeing them play against Brazil (I hope) should make for a beautiful game.

I think it might be Senegal v Japan. Japan finished 2-1-0 and topped their (relatively weak) group while Turkey finished 1-1-1, second to Brazil in an otherwise average group. Turkey also reports six injured players plus two suspended. Japan is riding a wave of confidence and hometown pride, which should give them the edge. If this is so, then it's Senegal over Japan, and on to a date with Brazil. I hope I haven't jinxed either team by saying that. ;-)

Their dance routine is very cool, and it would be exciting to see them play Brazil. But they have to play either Turkey or the "We're On A Mission From God" Japan squad first. I love these guys from Senegal, but for their sakes, I hope they play Turkey. Japan will hurt them.

Oops. Sorry WC2002 -- timed my post poorly. Incidentally, I agree with your analysis, but your conclusion stinks. Likewise ;-)

Ahem. They'll face England of course. As we are a better side than Belgium, who will beat the Brazilians. Pretty please.

Bixby23: Your analysis was well-timed, a pretty good juxtaposition for my analysis. But your conclusion stinks. ;-)

This Senegal fan, captured celebrating in Stockholm, expresses the joy of it all pretty well.

I came across two slightly dated but nevertheless fascinating articles on Senegalese football on the Guardian website. The first describes how the team has progressed since 1992 and takes us up to their qualifying for this tournament. It is informative and funny. The second is a diary from a journalist who spent a week with them after they beat France. Again, it is both informative and funny. It contains a brilliant and hilarious quote from Diouf . He may be brightening up the premiership with his vocabulary as well as his feet next season.

It contains a brilliant and hilarious quote from Diouf. Anyone know the French original for that line? I really want to use it next time I take the Eurostar.

I suppose I've shown my World Cup ignorance again- GOOOOOOOOOOOAL is dated, apparently it's all about "Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal!" now... :)
