The World Cup of 1958 never happened! :

Swedish TV will air a documentary on Wednesday about a group called "Konspiration 58" [only swedish], claiming that the football (or soccer for ye usians) World Cup of 1958 (held in Sweden) never took place; it was supposedly staged in the US on closed arenas. It all was a cold war publicity stunt by the western powers to spread the new medium television world wide. A thing that little Sweden did not have the technical competence to pull through.
The idea and the pictures are wonderful, and soccer is more important than the moon landing. Link lifted straight from kuro5hin.

Ummm ... read the comments. This is an elaborate troll by the Swedish Government. Curious. I'm trying to imagine the U.S. government pulling a similar stunt involving sport.

Did anyone in the US (ok, America = South America + North America I know..) actually watch association football before World Cup 94? Pth, there goes that theory.. Of course, it could be that nothing we see on telly is real, its just lil pixies drawing and fooling us. Or something á la The Truman Show.. Hmm.. I'm gonna go and be paranoid somewhere, excuse me..

No conspiracy is good enough to have manufactured Pele's famous first goal in the 1958 final. (Oh, by the way, Dubya apparently asked the Brazilian president: 'do you have blacks, too?' The man obviously needs an education in football.)
