Doing a little research on Duncan and Navarro from the Yanks ... They seem to be decent prospects. Trying to ot things into perspective, Green and Beltre both had decent seasons last year, but Green was over paid. Kent might make his move over to third because Beltran is not an option according to Depo. Some people are calling this a fire sale. I've seen at Dodger Thoughts that this deal might fall through (according to espn) because they were not expecting Beltre to sign with the M's. One crazy offseason after another. Being a baseball fan is not easy.

Fucking mind-blowing. It'll be a miracle if Duncan or Navarro make any kind of impact.

Wow. I can't wait to catch the Johnson-Schilling matchup.

from a Dodger Thoughts comment: "According to the LA Times, the deal has changed. LA still receives Duncan, Navarro, and Vazquez, but they give up Ishii, Cora, and Brian Falkenborg, and will spin Navarro off to Colorado for Shawn Chacon. Also, LA reportedly has made a seven year, $105 million offer to J.D. Drew and a two-year, $10 million offer to proven run producer Tony Batista. The Batista move will be announced at a press conference tomorrow. Jim Bowden could not be reached for comment."

Clicking around the radio dial this morning on the way in... Shawn Green has a no trade clause, and isn't interested in leaving LA according to ESPN?

The big unit going to the Yanks is going to happen. What I hate are all of these "sure thing" deals that get hyped and then they arent the trades that finally goes through! So I will wait for the press Coference when "big Unit" is introduced by the "boss'.... That could be today or it could be next year! So Wake me when this happens!

waiting.......waiting.....waiting..... meanwhile the Sox signed Clement. The Yankees and Sox seasons never end!

They don't, usfbull. In ways, it's exciting, but it's also tiring.

Speaking of deals: A's send Mulder to Cards. Sayonara Big Three. Billy Beane, WTF?
posted by billsaysthis at 09:27 PM on December 18, 2004
Wow. I hadn't seen that one yet. Time will tell if Beane did the right thing or not, but I think he was trying to avoid the situation the Sox got into this year with a bunch of important players entering free agency. The Sox can handle such a situation because they can throw money at the problem as a last resort. Beane cannot. So he's turning All Stars now into All Stars a few years from now. Haren looks solid, with a solid WHIP, good K/9 and low walks everywhere he's been. Calero was nasty in his major league time last year. A quick Googling says Barton is the #41 prospect in all of the minor leagues, according to somebody. Not a lot of playing time, but some monstrus numbers.

Local perspective on the deal.
posted by yerfatma at 11:56 AM on December 19, 2004
This sucks. I don't even want to read the justifications that I'm sure are coming in at Athletics Nation. Just add Mulder to the long list of A's players that did well for a few years, then left or were dealt to greener pastures. Schott runs the team "like a business," which means he's a miserly prick. We've been "rebuilding" every couple of years now, which is just a euphemism for dumping salary. The only thing I can take comfort in is that Mulder went to the NL, and not to the fricking Yankees or Red Sox. That would just be too much. I've got a lot of faith in Beane, and, without checking, I'm certain that the players we got are very promising. But what does that mean? By the time they (or any other player in the A's system) is developed and has a breakout year, we'll maybe be able to rent them for a year before they migrate east toward the money. This sucks.

Has anyone else noticed how awful Buster Olney's trade "analysis" has been?
posted by yerfatma at 07:54 PM on December 19, 2004
Olney is a homer. He may know something about the Yankees and maybe the Red Sox, His knowledge of the rest of MLB is lacking big time. Just because he wrote a book on the Yankees doesnt make him an expert on MLB. Of course, I question the pedigree of many of ESPN's "experts" As I said, almost three days ago, wake for the press conference anouncing the trade.. Its then, and ONLY then will I believe the deal is finally done!

It says Vasquez refused to report to Los Angeles for a physical... can he do that without forfeiting his contract?
posted by dusted at 11:42 PM on December 21, 2004
I also think the Dodgers wanted to move Vasquez, yet no one wanted him. Apparently there isn't life outisde of Yankee stadium for Vazquez.

Also, the Dodgers signed J.D. Drew reportedly.
posted by jasonspaceman at 07:50 AM on December 22, 2004
Vasquez has a contractual right to demand a trade after a year I guess, and the Dodgers knew that.
posted by jerseygirl at 10:44 AM on December 22, 2004
wow! The Dodgers, lose Beltre, Green and Penny all in 24 hours. And Finley. There has to be a method behind thier madness. If someone could help me out with this ... please do.
