saying the reports that it was an act of revenge or extortion were not true I can't really think of any other reason to kidnap someone, though.

Right? I guess they do things a bit differently in Brazil.

Yeah. To them kiddnapping is like taking a girl out without meeting her grandparents first. I keed, I keed.

[This is sad, especially because of how common such kidnappings are in South and Central America.] Why would Real Madrid loan him out for experience? The guy will be 21 when he gets there, has played at the top level in Brazil for three or four years and even a few times for the national side. I know RM has a backlog at every position but this seems unlikely to me. If anything, I'd expect the club to sell one of their underperforming MFs like Solari or Celades and give that playing time to Robhino so he can take over from Zidane in 2006.

I heard on NPR this morning that they were negotiating a ransom of $2mil. Man, if I were a Brazil celeb... ... wait a minute, I think I posted an article about Robinho earlier, which mentioned the risk of kidnappings of Brazilian celebrities' family members. Here! Posted back on Sept 5. An excerpt from my post: "The real-life threats that poor boys (and their families) face when they rise from the slums to pro soccer success." Sadly prophetic.

I blame the Yahooification of the WorldCup2002! Make the Yahooligans pay the ransom.

This reminds me. The kidnapping of Urbina's mother is still unresolved. Yet he says he will report to the Tigers for Spring Training.
