Yankees Suck: "Seattle Mariners fans who tried to wear 'Yankees Suck' T-shirts during a three-game weekend series against New York were told to turn their shirts inside out, take them off or leave."

As a Sox fan, can I just say I'm sick of "Yankees Suck"? It was fun for a while, but once the chant started appearing in places other than Fenway Park (or at Fenway during a non-Yanks series) it should have been killed. Sign at last night's Celtics-Sixers game: "Celtics Suck." Live by the sword, die by the sword, I guess.

Yeah, that sort of thing gets old pretty quick, but never underestimate staying power of a meme. Dennis Potvin is still the object of a chant at Madison Square Garden (two chants, actually: the "sucks" chant and the "beat your wife" chant). What's he been retired now, twenty years?

i think this is crap of the mariners. if you ever watch a broadcast of or go to a game between the white sox and the cubs, you see "CUBS SUCK" and "SOX SUCK" tee shirts all over. no one at the parks care.

I went to see the Yankees in Oakland last week and you should have seen the number of crazy shirts... all sorts of Yankees Suck shirts, Yuck the Fankees, Jeter Swallows, etc... not to mention all the anti-Giambi stuff going on...

mind you, whether or not the mariners allow the shirts, it doesn't change the fact that the yankees do suck.

Lescour 26 World Series victories say other wise, I think it sucks to not be a Yankee's fan.

I think it sucks to not be a Yankee's fan. That's a question to be answered in the Afterlife. I tend to think of following the Red Sox as an Indulgence.

Outside Counsel, the Potvin chants at MSG are part of the place now. It's now like the seventh inning stretch at a ballgame... a tradition. Also, they help us Ranger fans remember how much we're supposed to hate the sucky Islanders. Through their years of futility many Ranger fans, friends of mine, forgot all about the rivalry. When a buddy recently suggested he was going to root for L.I. if they beat the Leafs, I reminded him of how much the Rangers hate the Islanders (apparently Yashin's sucker punch wasn't enough to do the trick) and I used the whistle and "Potvin sucks!" chant to illustrate the point. Oh, and I haven't heard the "Beat Your Wife Potvin" chant in a few years. I think polpe decided it was a little much for our PC-world. Hating a rival is part of sports. It should be allowed. I'll welcome condemnations when it gets taken too far (booing anthems, physical threats to players from fans, etc), but the general cheers, jeers, signs and shirts are fine in my book. "[Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca] Hale said she heard of T-shirts at Yankee Stadium last year featuring a New York firefighter urinating on Seattle star Ichiro Suzuki. 'There are different standards,' Hale said. 'That was apparently appropriate at Yankee Stadium. It wouldn't be at Safeco Field.'" You can buy "the Original Yankees Suck T-shirt" or get your groove on with "The Ballad of The Yankees Suck," which won Best Yankees Suck Song.
