Online voting for the All-Star Game starts today. : Last season, 2.2 million online votes were cast by 1 million fans, up 25% from the previous year. This year they are sure to see even larger numbers as online ballots are now also available in Japanese and Spanish. So, who are you voting for?

I don't know. I still think the season is too young to decide yet. Randy Johnson for sure though.

My votes? Hmmm... AL only, since I don't follow the senior circuit that closely... C : Jorge Posada 1B: Carlos Delgado (but Mike Sweeney or John Olerud would be fine) 2B: Alfonso Soriano 3B: Eric Chavez SS: Alex Rodriguez (my vote for the next 5 years at least) OF: Torii Hunter, Manny Ramirez, Ruben Sierra (Magglio Ordonez if Sierra comes back down to earth before the game) DH: Rafael Palmeiro

It's a bit early for me yet as well. I want to try to get to a few games before I vote, but as long as we are discussing All Star Games, let me just say that I think the baseball All Star Game is the only one that's worth paying any attention to. (The Baseball Hall of Fame is, similarly, superior to all other HOFs, for different reasons that we can get into some other time.) The Pro Bowl just looks goofy-- like a pick up game, and, in common with hockey, players who are not used to playing with each other mesh poorly. Also in common with hockey is the fact that some of the physicality of a regular season game, or a play-off match-up is lost. Hoops is just playground ball-- good for what it is, but not the best way to watch the best of the best. In contrast, the Mid-Summer Classic is the perfect combination of team endevor and individual confrontation. The batter vs. the pitcher, trying to get on base, trying to move the runner. I can hardly wait for this year's edition!
