FIGHT CLUB!: At a secret S.F. fight club, an amateur with a primal urge to test his mettle finds himself in a basement ring with no room to run ... "Just once, I wanted to play with no rules."

This also violates the SECOND rule of fight club. We are the all singing, all dancing shit of the world...

Some do it for fun, some do it for sport, some do it for reasons perhaps less clearly defined. Some do it because they're really fucking stupid.

I agree with rocketman and wfrazerjr.

Damn, this is the second story I've read today that disturbed me. The first was the 123 people arrested for attending a dog fight down here in Georgia. I realize it's not a sport, but the amount of cash being gambled sure makes it sound like one.

Not a sport/not athletes. On the contrary, I think that most male sports (boxing obviously excepted), at some level, are a polite replacement for direct conflict. We may be too far removed from our primal self to even notice any more, but I think sport evolved because it's safer to set rules for a "contest" than actually put all of your pride and ego on the line in a fight. I am fully aware of how retrograde that sounds, but I think the real message of Fight Club (i.e., not the one that any number of guys in college think it's about when they watch it on Thursdays over a case of beer) was an important one.

I agree that the message of Fight Club was an important one. But I also think guys going out and doing this is not smart. Think of the guy who lost his eyebrow ring - for starters, why didn't he just take it out? Too concerned with looking good while getting his ass beat? I bet he looked great with all that blood running down his face. I like to think that these days, if you've got something to prove, you can go out and volunteer. You can sign up for the armed forces, or build homes through Habitat for Humanity. You can join any number of youth organizations as an adult leader, coach little league, or get involved with your church. Run for public office. I'm far more interested in people being constructive than destructive.
