Shauna Rohbock,: the driver for the U.S. womens' bobsled team, has been called to active duty by the National Guard. This will cause her to miss the World Cup competitions beginning next month, and may keep her out of the 2006 Olympics in Torino.

Unfortunate, no doubt, for both her and the team and its fans but not unsurprising in the current environment; if she didn't expect this, she was simply fooling herself.

See the President really is creating new jobs*. War is good for the economy. *sorry, the economist in me won't let that stand. It's not a new job, but a vacancy that an unemployed person can fill. And it's temporary, so it has no long-lasting viable effect on the economy.

There's no indication that she didn't expect it. It's worth noting, however, that if she's like most Guard members, she was in it in order to make ends meet. This war isn't like WWII -- economics, not the draft, play a large part in determining who goes. Thus, unlike WWII, you won't see major league baseball players going Over There. Instead, the athletes who do get called up will be women, and men who aren't in the Big Fat Four pro sports.
