I watched a Hardwood Classics replay of Michael Jordan scoring 42 on the Lakers on December 20, 1988, handing LA its first four-game losing streek since 1979. It was the style of NBA play I remembered but announcer Skip Carey gave a hint at the future when he said that Bulls coach Doug Collins was "becoming the first in the NBA to emphasize the three-point shot in his offense."
This was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's last season and if any current NBA greats watched it, they would never announce their final season in advance. Carey and color commentator Rick Barry spent the game talking about how old and slow Jabbar was, then after showing a brief ceremony for him at Chicago Stadium during pregame, they talked about how he must be getting bored by all the last-game ceremonies at different places.
In the final seconds with the Bulls up by 11, they did something that would start a fight in some games. Somebody found Jack Haley of the Bulls under the basket for an uncontested dunk.
Both teams had their seasons ended by the Detroit Pistons. They beat Chicago in the Eastern Conference Finals 4-2, then swept L.A. in the NBA Finals.
