Pedro, Schilling, Lowe, Wakefield...: According to Peter Gammons, at some point this afternoon, a deal could be sealed that sends Schilling to Boston in a 3 team deal that sends Fossum and Shoppach to MIL and Sexton to ARI. I love getting Christmas gifts at Thanksgiving. Thanks Theo!

oh, and why are the DBacks willing to take only Sexson when they at first wanted Johnson and Soriano? Seems like a step way back. Also seems like a shitty deal for the Beermakers. But good, I hate Selig and hope they lose 162 games. At least there's hope, Schilling has said only NY or Philly...

i heard the NY or PHI thing too, but from the tone of the ESPN article, it doesn't sound like Schilling is mortally opposed to going to Boston. "A source close to the Diamondbacks' Curt Schilling told Dan Patrick that Schilling hopes to find out later this afternoon whether he will be part of a three-team deal that would send him to Boston."

Schilling. ARod. Nomar. Manny. What makes Boston the underdog and the Yankees the Evil Empire? The fact that the Yankees have successfully bought the title a few times? Both are trying to out-buy each other for the right to lose to some team that actually produces talent (I hope). Go anyone but these two franchises. Actually, I'm likely just bitter because my team finishes third in this division every fucking year. This just guarantees that the Yankees are going to get Colon.

Nomar, Manny, Pedro != Clemens, Mussina, Giambi, Wells AND Trade != Signing highest paid FA each year

He has been regarded as the top offseason trade target of the Yankees, who stepped back in their pursuit when the Diamondbacks asked for Alfonso Soriano and Nick Johnson in return. Well, duh. Schilling is 37 and wants a three-year extension on a $12 million contract. I can't imagine why the Yankees wouldn't give up their two best young hitters for that? This trade actually works out pretty well for the three teams involved, I think. The BoSox get another stud starter, the DBacks get a power-hitting first baseman for a guy they weren't going to resign next year, and the Brewers get a couple of decent players that won't cost them jack crap. Asshats. This just guarantees that the Yankees are going to get Colon. I'd prefer Colon cancer for Steinbrenner.

It should be pointed out that Gammons is notorious for annoucing "deals" before they are done, only to have them disappear from the radar entirely. He's one of these "shotgun" psychics, where he fires off 20 different guesses/pellets, and when one or two of them hit the mark, declares himself "correct". He's built a good reputation for getting some information from his inside sources (usually in Boston) but he's been wrong about a lot of things recently. That said, adding Schilling to the AL will DEFINITELY spice up my perpetual-league baseball spring draft.

Interesting anyway. If there's any truth to this (grum is right on the money about Gammons), looks like the Sox are going to extend Varitek and see Shoppach as a bargaining chip rather than their 2005 starter. Oh well. Not like we ever get to see anyone we draft actually succeed in Boston. Except possibly Curt Schilling.

agreed on the peter gammons account. the latest on the schilling transaction is that it could be a straight ARI to BOS trade seeing Fossum, Lyon and a few other prospects head west for Schilling and an ARI prospect.

what about extending varitek and keeping shoppach as backup? isn't mirabelli's contract about up?

Looks like this one will come down to the wire and Curt's decision. Which means his thanksgiving will have some uninvited guests... This is one where Gammons is correct to report it though, because everyone is talking about it and teh teams aren't attempting to hide it... it seems like a done deal between the teams, and we just need to see what Schilling wants. For what it's worth, I am glad the Yankees were smart enough not to give up Johnson and Soriano. I had expected the pressure from george to force them into poor decisions.

I wonder if Schilling will agree to the trade. I'm pretty surprised he wasn't immediately happy to go to the team that came 5 outs away from the World Series. He must not like Boston all that much. Or Fenway. Or Pedro. Or Manny. Nomar? - nah, I got nothing against Nomar. I can understand players not really wanting to play for the Yankees (love 'em or hate but few are indifferent), but who hates the Sox besides Yankee fans?

Schilling's issues seem to be the following: - he wants a contract extension before he signs - he wants to make sure his family is on board for the change. he's stressed his family's opinion matters entirely. - Terry Francona. I don't think it has anything to do with the city. He came up in the Boston farm system (2nd round draft pick in 86) and was traded (with Brady Anderson) for Mike Boddicker in 88. I've never heard him say a bad word about Boston, actually.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I mean, giving up Fossum to get Schilling? That's oh, just a small little upgrade. I actually don't want to see it happen more because it'd send George into a foolish rampage... the Sox are gonig to get better either way. But if they do it this way, George is going to go nuts and ultimately hurt the Yanks.
