They shouldn't be cranky, they should be happy. They are in 1st place, have a great coach, are solid defensively, and are well positioned for a decent run in the playoffs. Leafs are likely to finish no higher than they did last year even with the addition of Tavares, and then will meet Boston in the first round ... we all know how that plays out.

A rational individual might realize that.
Perhaps the Islanders fan base could take a lesson from Toronto's.
A number of years ago Mats Sundin refused to waive his NMC, and finished the year with the Leafs, then returned after signing as a UFA with the Vancouver Canucks.

Bettman and Daly saw the cone layout and asked where the pit lane was going to be.

Not in Raleigh. NASCAR isn't much of a thing here

Ehh, Tavares and Sundin are different things. Sundin had actually done something with the Leafs in the playoffs, was their all-time leader in points by then and took the Canucks deal as a retirement tour. Tavares left at his peak when the team was on an upswing and had minimal success while he was there.
I'd be down on Tavares too if I was an Isles fan. Think Leafs fans would be forgiving if Matthews didn't extend and went to Chicago in free agency?

As a U.F.A.? I would be. That's what Unrestricted means. The player has fulfilled all obligations to the franchise, his movement for a job is now unrestricted. The Islanders fans anger and frustration should be directed at the ownership & management of their own club. They had 9 years to build something, stabilize the situation. The franchise failed, not John Tavares. Furthermore, the club is in 1st place in their division, what's the big fuss, things seem better without the player.
