In 2011, there was talk of declaring Peyton Manning the MVP in absentia, as the Colts were so clearly incapable of competing with him out for the season due to his neck injury.

Reversing that thinking and awarding the MVP as a recognition of dramatic impact on an addition basis rather than a subtraction basis, the league would do well to consider Garoppolo.
