I watched the Army-Navy game this afternoon. It is a tradition in our house for a number of reasons. I spent 2 years wearing a bar on my collar and managing a Mark 1, Mod. B desk, steel, two-pedestal for the US Army on Okinawa, but since most of my career was spent supporting Naval Aviation, I have rooted for Navy for a long time. Having a wife whose father was a career Navy Captain, a submariner with 5 war patrols in WWII to his credit who also captained the first guided missile submarine in the Navy, means we root for Navy or find other sleeping arrangements. Still, I sort of felt good when Army finally broke the streak. They earned it.
I also stayed with the broadcast long enough to watch Vern Lundquist's very emotional farewell address. He is one of the all-time great play-by-play guys, and I believe until he announced his retirement really didn't get the credit he deserved. He is being replaced at CBS by Brad Nessler, who calls a pretty good game. If he does half as well as Lundquist did, he will do well indeed.
