...and that one was off-set by an intentional grounding penalty that I'm pretty sure was the result of the helmet-to-helmet hit...

Once again, when it is Brady or Brees taking those hits or anything close they are called each and every occurrence.
I can understand no penalties being called when Newton or any other QB rushes head first through the line into a pile of defenders. Allowing head shots on the guy because he's tough and doesn't whine loud enough or frequently enough to establish influence is bad officiating.
