Alia Atkinson Becomes First Black Female Swimming Champion: The Jamaican Alia Atkinson became the first black woman to win a world swimming title, taking the 100-meter breaststroke at the world short-course championships Saturday. Not meaning to take anything away from Alia, but Sam Riley is one of Australia's greatest indigenous athletes, and my daughter still treasures a birthday bowling pin with her autograph.
