Oakland A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy hit in head with line drive, has surgery: The A's flew to Seattle on Thursday for their biggest series of the season, but their minds were on something bigger still.
Their teammate, pitcher Brandon McCarthy, lay in a hospital bed recovering from surgery for an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture caused by a line drive that struck him in the head while he was pitching a day earlier.

The thing is, I saw this on the news the night it happened and McCarthy didn't seem hurt. He sat there a few minutes but got up and walked off on his own. Glad they insisted he go to the hospital and the docs checked thoroughly though.

Scary, and it's still not over. Should pitchers wear helmets?
The play the third baseman makes on that ricochet is pretty crazy. He got the out.

The slo-mo replay of the hit and his reaction makes it clear something was not right, and it looked like he knew damn well something was not right while sitting up. Scary, scary hit. Hope he recovers completely with no ill effects.

Link to the video is here; view with caution, it's not for the squeamish.
My thoughts and prayers to McCarthy and family and hope for his speedy recovery.
