U.S. Women Take Soccer Gold: Before an Olympic-record crowd of 80,203, two goals by midfielder Carli Lloyd and some spectacular saves by keeper Hope Solo led the U.S. women's soccer team to the gold medal over Japan. Yuki Ogimi scored the only goal for Japan. American midfielder Tobin Heath got away with a handball in the first half that would have been a penalty kick because it occurred in the box.
Ball-on-hand in the box is a penalty, apart from when it isn't. Lucky, lucky Americans.

The other thing to add is that Canada, aggrieved losers of that semifinal with the USA, took the bronze with a scrambled stoppage-time goal despite barely having a shot on target during the second half against France.
They then hotfooted it down from Coventry to Wembley to receive their medals, where the crowd showed their love of the game by booing Sepp "women footballers, wear tighter shorts! where's my bribe?" Blatter when he was announced as the presenter. Nice work, all.

The women's soccer gold medal game looks like it's going to be terrible, inasmuch as it will kill a number of spectators with weak hearts.
