Devils nip Kings to force Game 6: New Jersey danced down a tightrope during a wild final minute Saturday to stay alive in the Stanley Cup final. They held on as Los Angeles stormed their net with an extra skater to get a 2-1 win and cut the Kings’ lead in the NHL championship series to 3-2. Game 6 goes Monday in L. A. Now it is the Kings who finally have to sweat a little, although they brushed aside the question of pressure, 25 times in NHL history a team took a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Cup final, 20 of them won in a sweep. No team has won in Game 6 after letting its lead slip to 3-2, one team (the 1945 Toronto Maple Leafs) went on to win in seven games and one, the 1942 Detroit Red Wings, blew a 3-0 lead and lost in Game 7 to the Maple Leafs, meanwhile, in the boardroom, the Devils appear to be on very thin ice.

After game 3, I just wanted the Devils to make it respectable. It's not like they were grossly outclassed in the first two games, which could have gone either way. Game 3 was an embarrasment, and it looked like the Devils were too small, too slow, and too tired to keep up. Game 4 was a pleasant surprise, and it was nice to avoid the sweep. Now, after game 5, those sons o' bitches have given me hope again.

You'd think one of the Wall St. billionaires living in Short Hills or Upper Saddle River would take over the Devils, through bankruptcy or otherwise, since the team's on-ice performance has been consistently strong for over 15 years now. Settling the money issue would only help that.
Still, go Devils! Win tonight and get back to home ice.

I have never seen a news article about a team losing money actually explain why the team is losing money. I assume it probably has something to do with their arena deal, like in the case of the Blue Jackets. But still, I've seen articles about the Blue Jackets losing money, I think also by the Globe and Mail, and they never explain precisely how the team is losing money. It's more obvious in Columbus because the fan support is not there.
