Is giving up a leadoff walk worse than surrendering a leadoff single? Is the most important pitch the first strike? Does the leadoff man need speed? With all the credit that Bill James and Sabermetric analysis receive for the success of certain teams maybe we can examine some widely held baseball notions. As with so many other types of anecdotal evidence, people, being people, are usually wrong. Just this morning I ran into the same type of argument with my mother, who started most of her sentences with "Most people I know...".
