Patriots' Offensive Coordinator Bill O'Brien will interview for the Penn State head coaching position. If he were to be hired, he would continue a trend that's existed since 1950. O'Brien was graduated from Brown University. Rip Engle came to Penn State from being head coach at Brown in 1950, bringing with him one of his former players and eventual successor, Joe Paterno. Talk about being in a rut.

I don't understand why O'Brien is interviewing before the season is over. This makes me think the Pats aren't really too concerned about losing him. I realize it's nominally a bye week and all, but it seems irregular to me.

They made the rule about assistants being able to interview during bye weeks specifically for Patriot assistants (Crennel and Weis) who were unable to interview for head coaching jobs when the Pats were constantly going to the Superbowl. A lot of coaching jobs get filled in January.
