Michael Irvin Champions Equality: Former Dallas Cowboys great Michael Irvin appears shirtless on the cover of this month's gay men's magazine Out and discusses his passion for equality issues. The former Cowboy wide receiver known more for his hands, motor mouth, flashy clothes and cocaine use says he will support any current player who decides to come out...

"If anyone comes out in those top four major sports, I will absolutely support him. ... When a guy steps up and says, 'This is who I am,' I guarantee you I'll give him 100 percent support."

A noteworthy and admirable stance for a man that I was absolutely convinced had no redeeming qualities. Perhaps Mr. Irvin has grown up.

Irvin always had redeeming qualities. Nobody outworked him on the Cowboys and nobody cared more about winning -- not even fans.

I'm glad he's taking this stand. Somebody's going to come out (or be outed) in the NFL soon, and the more people who speak up the easier it will be on that player.

Article is here, but it's timing out right now.

Probably as good a thread as any to mention "faggot" still seem to be a popular word in the NFL. DeSean Jackson, James Harrison. For some reason, ESPN can't get as heated up about these stories as they did about Kobe's ref incident.

Michael Irvin and Sean Avery should get together and talk in schools or something. Just so I can't believe that's happening.

Just a personal opinion, but I think I would be more impressed by his stance if he could take it without the provocative photo shoot.

Why does the photo shoot takes away from what he had to say?

And do you honestly think he suggested the photo shoot idea?
