Book Filter Redux...Michael Lewis, excellent author of such Wall Street reads as Liar's Poker and The Money Culture has written a new book called Moneyball, The Art of Winning an Unfair Game where he deconstructs the "Idea". The Idea being the thing that Bill James, Billy Beane, Paul DePodesta, Hal, and Grum all know that we don't. Here's ESPN's Rob Neyer interviewing the author. It sounds like a great read with great anecdotes, but I'm bummed that I won't get to find out why Barry Zito's apartment is nicknamed the "Stabbin' Cabin". Linked via the Sports Frog

btw, did anyone see the new Ken Burns' documentary Inning 7: The Capital of Baseball? I think it was on PBS a couple of nights ago.

I'll read it with a jaundiced eye: my ardor for Michael Lewis cooled when he married Tabitha Soren. Take that anyway you want.

Hey, tabitha soren was a hottie. worldcup: that is just one part of Burns' 'Baseball', a nine-inning affair from the mid-to-late 90s. 18 hours. I've never watched it, but maybe this summer would be a good time.

If anyone ever read "Confessions of a Street Addict," by James J. Cramer, then you will remember that Michael Lewis was allegedly involved in bringing the Financial News IPO "TheStreet.com" public, even quoted by Cramer as coming up with the name and attending meetings at his farmhouse during their brainstorming session. I say allegedly because he now denies any involvement in this at all and never returned any of the founders phonecalls after agreeing to a 5% stake in the firm. Very bizarre.

Captain Stabbin is the porn worlds version of the Love Boat's Captain Stubing, played by none other than Gavin McLeod. It's my guess that this is where the name comes from.
