To be fair, the word used was devout, in the story I read. And I can certainly hope that if he switches baseball allegiances, it won't require an hour-long special. Although ESPN would probably do it.

Had I not seen this in a major daily newspaper, I would have thought it to be a rather late April Fool joke. I'm still not entirely convinced it is not.
