St Louis & Colorado exchange 4 in blockbuster deal: Erik Johnson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 NHL draft and the projected face of the franchise for years to come, has been sent to the Colorado Avalanche. The Blues dealt Johnson and Jay McClement to the Avalanche for forward Chris Stewart and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who are both former first-round picks. In the deal, the Blues will also receive a conditional second-round pick in 2011 or 2012 and the Avs will get a conditional first-round pick in '11 or '12.

I seem to remember another trade, back in the mid-90s, involving a highly-touted defenseman being traded after only a couple underachieving seasons. Anyone know what ever became of Chris Pronger?

He carved out a niche for himself knocking up television reporters in Canada?

I like this deal for both teams, but I like St. Louis' end a little better. If they can keep Stewart motivated and healthy, he's going to be a 30-goal guy for a long time. Shattenkirk has a high ceiling offensively, so they'll need a stay-at-home stud to pair him with.

The trade deadline isn't for another 9 days, and already there have been some big name players moved already.

The Canadian sports networks that are preparing their day-long trade deadline deal shows have got to be shitting themselves that they'll be spending all the time talking about a 4th liner being dealt for a 6th round pick.

One would think that the Avs made out the best on this - Johnson is a big mobile defenceman with good to potentially great offensive output.

I love Stewart and don't know much about Shattenkirk, other than he seems offensively minded and has a killer name. But I like Johnson better than either guy.

Yeah, they really have to stop this. It's overhyped and the NHL clearly doesn't operate the way it used to, when most deals were made on the deadline itself.
