Crawford Takes Pickoff Throw in the Groin: Even after he was racked by a pickoff throw Tuesday and suffered a testicular contusion, Tampa Bay Rays left fielder Carl Crawford refuses to wear a cup. "I don't think that's going to happen again," Crawford said. "It had never happened in eight years, you know what I'm saying?"
Nuts!

Unless Crawford is safe on base and calls time as he is crumpling to the ground in agony, I don't see how the umpire could have called him safe.
And if Crawford was capable of calling time in that situation, he'd be the toughest man alive.

He might have called it, but unless they're letting dogs umpire games now, no one would have heard it.

After watching the replay, you can't fault the ump. He was behind the bag, and it probably looked like the ball hit the 1st baseman's glove, instead of giving Crawford a 3 ball count.
And this guy is still the toughest man alive...

Should the Rays ever form a singing group, the soprano's chair is now filled

Is Hans Moleman available for comment?

I would think that fear of this happening even once in a career would be enough to inspire one to wear a cup. Even if you forget the intense pain involved, a nationally broadcast shot of you taking a baseball to the crotch and subsequently rolling on the ground for a few minutes will surely be part of your career's highlight reel every time you're brought up on ESPN. Or Sportsfilter.

An outfielder who's game is built on speed, like Crawford, isn't going to wear a cup. I doubt there's a outfielder in the game who wears one.

Ouch! that is brutal.
I noticed that after he was hit, he touched the base but then fell over onto the ground, where he was tagged out. Does that actually stand? It certainly doesn't seem right that a player injured by an errant throw by the other team should be able to be tagged out while he is writhing in pain on the ground.
