Germany's "oracle octopus" Paul has powers that reach much farther than being able to predict the outcome of World Cup matches.

Paul has actually recreated himself as the centerpiece of the entire tournament.

Scoop! Paul the Octopus exposed.

Except that it seems as though the Crikey color theory is not going to hold all the way through: Paul has predicted Spain to win the championship.

"This has been the tournament of 4-2-3-1." Jonathan Wilson piece; includes some interesting comments about Germany's success.

Now that the circus has left town, here's some NHL free-agent news...

Evgeni Nabokov is jumping to the KHL, having signed a 4-year contract with St. Petersberg.

Rob Neidermayer signs with Buffalo for one year

tommytrump's favorite goalie Jaroslav Halak moves to St Louis for 4 years

Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanquay return to Calgary

And the hot rumors are Marty Turco taking Nabokov's place in San Jose, and my own Red Wings making an ill-advised push for Mike Modano...

I think Modano could be a good asset. They'll have him in on the 3rd line, somewhere he can be effective without having to shoulder too much of a burden.

Modano has said that he'll only play if he thinks he can get through the season physically and mentally, I doubt he would commit if he couldn't see himself playing at the same level all the way through the season and playoffs.

Apparently, the Yankees are closing in on a deal with the Mariner for Cliff Lee.

posted by holden at 01:39 PM on July 09, 2010

I say ill-advised not because I don't think he would be a good piece to add, but because he's not the right piece. They need a good Dman more than a 3rd line, 40 year old center. Now that Lebda has gone to Toronto, that need is just that much greater. And I'd hate to see them give up Abdelkader, Helm, or both to sign Modano. If Ken Holland can sign those two, pick up a decent blueliner, AND sign Modano...I'm all for it. Don't know if he can do it under the cap, though...

This site is kind of fun.

Why didn't this make the cut here at Spofi? That's just funny.

posted by BoKnows at 02:28 PM on July 09, 2010

Dunno how that got through, BoKnows, but that's awesome. Thing is, there's probably a bunch of ambulance chasers swarming this guy's house, wanting to sue the Yankees for not properly protecting him...

True. True.

Great to read just now that Cliff Lee is going to the Rangers. Nolan will be happy to have him and the Yankees have enough mound talent already.

Things got weird after stage 6 of the Tour. Both fighters got a $400 fine, and the careless journalist got banned for a day.

THE FUTURE IS NOW. Or at least it better be because there may not be a next year.

The fight was total madness - one of them flew in brandishing a wheel!

The Robbie McKewan thing: I' surprised that doesn't happen more often.
