There's Crying in Soccer: Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho was leaving the site of the Champions League final when he spotted his player Marco Materazzi "standing alone and apparently disconsolate," according to the New York Times. The video of their tearful farewell prompts the paper's Lede blog to float this theory behind Mourinho's success: "[P]layers appear desperate to do whatever it takes to win his approval, like schoolgirls fighting for an approving glance from their favorite teacher."
What is it exactly that Mackey is trying to read into this exchange?
They had just won the Champions League and a treble. Moments before that video, Mourinho had just told his team he was leaving Inter to manage Real Madrid. It was an emotional moment.
Why is this blogger trying to dissect this into something more than what it is?
And I've read the comments on that blog and apparently I'm not the only one doing a full-blown "WTF" over Mackey's ramblings.

Did anyone ever suggest that there was no crying in football? Gazza was at it 20 years ago.
