Augusta in Black and White.: Saw this in the latest National Geographic. Awesome pics as usual and unexpected stuff (as usual) such as: "Now Lourdes is home to practice law after a career away from Augusta. She drives in the downtown flats, quietly marveling that the same place could produce the Masters, President Woodrow Wilson, the Godfather of Soul, and the Patch." Learn more about the paradox that is Augusta. [Note: this is just an online teaser for the print edition.]

Also, NatGeo has an online poll that asks that asks "Should Augusta National Golf Club, home to the Masters and a private organization, be forced to include women?" I voted No. ("Yes" is winning.)

Yes should be winning, shame on you for thinking otherwise. What is it with you internetters and your thinking that people should have rights just because they're in the Constitution!

There's also a COMPLETELY ridiculous story on ABC News this week using the teaser, "Women are fighting for our country in Iraq? Why can't they members at Augusta National?" The teaser actually shows women in combat. It made me swear off Peter Jennings.

worldcup2002: thanks for the link...I'll have to pick up this issue. I'm interested to see that it's written by Ralph Wiley, of ESPN.com's Page 2. I don't care for some of his "R-Dub" writing style sometimes.

What is it with you internetters and your thinking that people should have rights just because they're in the Constitution! bill you crazy man, I don't have to like what people do with their private business, but I do support their right to do so. The key items for me were "a private organization, be forced to include." I'm guessing you were being pretty facetious and, because you support Liverpool, will not exercise my God-given right to bear arms (and arm bears).

On a totally more relevant note, Arnold Palmer's tip on how to beat Tiger: "Toughen up. Stop being wussies."

Arnie's right. Phil Mickleson can go see all the voodoo shrinks he wants to, he's still not going to beat Tiger. I had this conversation with my dad earlier. There are: a)people on tour who can hit the ball farther and more accurately than Tiger, and there are surely better putters out there. b)people on tour who perhaps are better strategists than Tiger, whose course management is of a higher calibre. There is virtually noone, however, who stacks up in the mental toughness like Tiger. Certainly not Mickleson, Els, Sergio or any of the current top names. He is a psychological disaster waiting to happen for every golfer playing with him on the back 9 of the Masters, and until someone can come along and pretend he's not there and just play their game, I think he's going to be dressing in green jackets for a while.

wc2k2, I see you been MeFi'ed; just because I left off the cute smiley face doesn't mean I was trolling rather than joking. Seriously, though, where is the line between public and private? The tournament surely uses significant public resources for security and other things, and most of the members are high-level businessMEN. "More business gets done on the golf course than any office" someone smart once said.

Liverpool rules, wc2k2! Thompson: We'll win every game left

That's very nice bill, but what's it got to do with golf? ;-)

Squealy, the universe is a holistic place and everything is connected to everything else. But in this instance I was just overwrought and responding to wc2k2's lfc comment.
