City of Brotherly Uuuhhhhggggg: Sports fans in Philadelphia have a bad reputation. They booed when their long-time star quarterback Donovan McNabb was drafted. (Something he took personally for years.) They booed and threw snow balls at Santa Claus. They booed when Michael Irvin lay motionless on the field with a neck injury that would end his career. They fought so much at football games that, for a time, their stadium had its own criminal court. Adding to this glorious legacy, at Wednesday night's Phillies game, a man allegedly stuck his own fingers down his throat and intentionally projectile vomited on a father and his two daughters who were cheering for the Washington Nationals (via MetaFilter).
This link on MetaFilter is broader than the vomiter.

Leave it to Ruppert Murdoch and Faux Channel 29. I thought Sarah Palin getting booed was one of the greatest moments in Philly sports history.

I think this thread will not be complete unless we get the philly fan from Metafilter who was greviously offended by this post in Metafilter.

I wrote about my positive interactions with Phillies fans both here and at Mefi. That said, I met another really nice Phillies fan just two days ago, so now I know four totally cool and nice people who root for them.
Since we just addressed this a couple of days ago, I can't help but wonder if the entire city of Philadelphia peed in rcade's Cheerios. /joking
Because that would be a lot of pee

Well, that would explain his rage.

When I lived in Dallas and went to Cowboys games, the roughest ones were inevitably when Philly came to town. I once saw three separate fistfights occuring in three separate sections at the same time between Cowboys and Eagles fans.
But I don't have a grudge against Philly. I love hating the rivals in the NFC East. Best division in football.

As long as you're not hung up on winning stuff.

The nose flick, pre-throwdown, is one of my all-time favorite moves.
Ah, Philly fans, if you think these fans are not representative of the true Philadelphia, then by all means, police yourselves.

The teams in the NFC East won 11 Super Bowls, more than the teams of any other division.
NFC E - 11;
AFC N - 7;
NFC W, AFC W, AFC E - 6;
NFC N - 4;
NFC S, AFC S - 2
Ah, Philly fans, if you think these fans are not representative of the true Philadelphia, then by all means, police yourselves.
Isn't that how fights break out? "Hey you, stop that! ... Make me, asshole"

Every fan base has their idiots, no doubt. But I have a family member who goes to see the Nationals play quite often, and of all the teams fans that take over their park he says the philly fans are by far the worst (and he hates the yankees). So that's one data point.

That's pretty bogus to compare it to divisions that weren't even created. The NFC South has had more Super Bowls than the NFC East since they were created in 2002.

bperk, I think Aardhart is taking the historical record based on current alignment so not so bogus. What would be bogus is counting back to the pre-SB league title years.
Plus, for NFC W and AFC N almost all the wins are from the 49ers and Steelers. Who, combined, have more trophies than any current division.

Well, that's certainly how you get a New Jersey dude to vomit all over you at a Phillies game...

It's totally bogus because some of the teams in the other divisions weren't even in existence when a lot of those Super Bowls were won.

I love you guys. Only SpoFi could turn a thread about boorish sports fans into a statistical debate.

bperk: You can't beat teams that don't exist yet and vice versa.
posted by billsaysthis at 12:49 PM on April 24, 2010
You end up comparing divisions with one or two teams from the 60s and 70s to teams that had all four for the whole time (and before).

At least Marvin Harrison gives Philadelphia sports fans a reason to be proud.
At least until he goes to prison.
