Shanny calls it a career: The lone member of the NHL's 600 goal/2000 PIM club, Brendan Shanahan, announces his retirement after 21 seasons. Could head of the NHLPA be in his future?
It seems like this news warrants some sort of reaction, although I'm not sure what. Shanny was one of the all-time great badasses to play the game, and his retirement is an end of an era. As a Whaler fan, I feel like I should somehow resent him for his brief stint at the mall, but as a hockey player I just have too much respect for him to resent. From that lightning quick snap shot, to the ratty old pair of shoulder pads he sported seemingly from the onset of adulthood (unlike today's weapons), the guy just exemplified everything that hockey was about. Thanks for the memories, Shanny.
