L.A. Kings let a season ticket holder look at their books: In an unprecedented move, the Los Angeles Kings have let one of their season ticket holder check their books. Now that is a great idea!
Surely the reason NHL teams are losing money is because they are spending too much on salaries. In any sane system, a team would work out their income (which barring a good playoff run, should be easily predicted) and base their salaries on that income. Instead teams pay whatever other teams are paying, try and fail to recoup that by fleecing the fans, and whine that they can't make money.

Yeah sure, salmcacis, but try telling that to the folks at CNNMoney.

This is a good idea. I think it will catch on but in a slightly different fashion. I think the wave of the future (could be way down the road, though) is publicly-owned teams. I'm not really sure why there aren't more of them now (am I correct in thinking only the Packer's are publicly owned?) but I think it will happen. And those teams' books will necessarily be opened. A little transparency is good for all involved
