Roy of the Rovers: A look back at the values of yesteryear. Maybe you have to be British.

Take a look at some of the comments. There's enough nostalgia to fill a thousand empty Wembleys right there.

(A bit of explanation: the Guardian, in a bid to get people buying the print newspaper, has been including facsimile copies of classic comics every day for the past week or so.)

I was never a regular reader of RotR, though I got a few annuals at Christmas, and I'd guess that lots of people's recollections are filtered through those. But it felt nostalgic even in the 1980s.

Did Americans have sporting comics in the 70s and 80s?

The comic strip Tank McNamara and NFL SuperPro are the only sports-related comic book or strips I can recall.

Why is there no online archive of Roy, dammit! I don't live in the UK anymore and I'd love to revisit such a classic piece of... Well America has Americana so I guess Briticana?

Whatever, all hail Roy!

Edit: That was a great read. Makes me sad that I grew up when the terraces were notoriously violent and my Dad wanted to take me, but was worried. Sadly by the time things improved, due to the way the game was changing, I had lost interest.

Then when Everton and River Plate had a friendly here recently, I couldn't go due to the price of the tickets...

*sigh*

What I wouldn't give to have an archive of Roy from start to finish. That'd be awesome.

There's a rather awful Official Roy website.
