Secrets of the fixture computer: Ever wondered why you have had to travel the length of the country on a wet Tuesday night to watch your team in action? Turns out that the game calendar is massively complicated but done by one guy on his laptop. Then the clubs, leagues and police weigh in. The 2009-10 schedule will be out tomorrow.

I seem to remember that Major League Baseball a few years ago had a really messed up schedule, with teams forced to travel more frequently than usual without the normal travel day. It turns out the schedule had been put together by a couple who lived in Pennsylvania (or someplace like that), and who didn't really have a clue about the ordeal of a 162-game MLB schedule. Putting a complicated schedule together on a laptop isn't really that difficult - mostly tedious - but it should be done by someone who understands what the teams really require.
