Sheffield, Mets agree: Gary Sheffield, one home run shy of 500 in his career, and the New York Mets have come to an agreement. All that is left is a physical.

Sweet! Wish I had thought of that. I still like my Phillies' chances.

As a Reds fan, I was sooooo happy to see him sign elsewhere. The last couple of days it looked like he might come here, since him and Dusty are friends. With our young ball club we don't need a cancer like him in our clubhouse. Our arrow is pointing upward, and even if we dont contend this year we are closer now then we have been for awhile with all the young talent we've been accumalating. So Mets, have fun with with Sheff, and his great team first attitude.

I'm not very familiar with the Mets outfield/first base but where exactly is Sheffield going to fit in? Yes he still has power, but I wouldn't be to keen on relying on him defensively.

I agree, YYM, I thought he would be an AL guy all the way.

Why do I always have to come here and set you guys straight? Gary Sheffield may or may not still have enough left in the tank to provide the right handed power bat that the Mets have needed for quite some time considering that they're mainly left handed hitters but his signing is a very low risk move. He is owed $14 million by Detroit and all the Mets are paying is the veteran league minimun of $400,000. If he can still display the power he's shown his entire career, he should be just fine. If not, like I said before, this is a low risk move and the Mets don't really lose anything out of this. Also, the Phillies were very interested in signing Sheff so this helps from keeping him away from the Phillies.

The Mets have not had a fiery leader in the clubhouse to spark the team like when Paul La Duca was there so with a presence like Sheff, he might fit in just fine. People want to call him a cancer and maybe he is but I want a player that wants to play everyday and that wants to win than someone that's complacent with just being on the team. Sheff may not be an everyday player anymore but from what's been said, he's fine with his role and knows that he can still make an impact with the Mets.
