Soccer fan shoots player dead: An Iraqi soccer fan shot dead a player of the opposing team as he tried to score an equalizing goal in the final minutes of a match
Holy shit is all that comes to my mind with this. I know that this isn't the absolute worst that can happen, but unfortunately a bar has been set yet again. Unfriggin' believable. But then again, not really.

If they're shooting each other over a football match, instead of over sectarianism, then I suppose that's progress.

The term "fan" to me is a person who cheers and supports their team during good times and bad, not someone who kills someone on the other team. "Soccer Terrorist" might have been a better headline

owlhouse, Please tell me/us more, don't know it (Galsgow Derby), but while I have heard of a lot of violence in the stands in UK football, never heard of this on the field.

Considering that the term "fan" is short for fanatic, this sounds about right.
This is just sad. Violence should play no part in sports but in other countries, soccer is more than a sport, it's almost a religion. I hate to see something like this happen on US soil...I could just imagine:
Marv Albert: And LeBron steals the ball away from Rajon Rondo...he's at full speed on the fast break. He goes up for the jam aaaaannnd Yeee, er...what just happened?!!? LeBron is down!! LeBron is down!! A Celtic fan in the first row just took out King James and he is not getting up! Is that...? Yes, that's Ben Affleck and he just shot LeBron.
Reggie Miller: Ya know Marv, that Affleck is not on my list of great, American actors but man, he sure has a helluva aim!!
