The Classic is back.: That's right, the World Baseball Classic has returned, and with it comes a brand-new WBC Confidence Pool. Step right up and rank your teams... oh, and can someone get ahold of Baseball Prospectus? I haven't seen him around lately.

I know so much about the abilities of these countries I thought it appropriate to predict Taipei to finish both 4th and 12th. Yikes.
I can't believe the Netherlands has a team. Orange uniforms will be exciting!

United States (Seriously, how is Chris Chelios still playing?)
His inability to skate has little to do with his relief pitching.

I'm in. Head rules heart - I'm expecting the Aussies to finish ahead of South Africa, but that's about it.

I'm in. I also entered the picks for Baseball Prospectus based on BP's odds for each team winning the whole thing -- link here (subscription required).

Thanks holden! I took a quick look for it when I set up the pool but couldn't find it. Not having a subscription probably affected my search somewhat.

No problem. Also, it actually was just posted this morning -- so that may explain why you did not see it.

And we're off to the races. Japan's early-morning 4-0 blanking of China means that we have actual standings to look at now.

China vs. Japan on the tee vee at the Eaton Centre Jays store.

Pool A action: Taiwan is quickly eliminated, scoring only a single run in the process. Japan clinches its passage to round 2. China and Korea play tomorrow at 5:30am EDT in the pool's final elimination match.
Pool B starts play tomorrow, Pool C gets underway today.
Pool D started 45 minutes ago-- and the Netherlands have an early 3-0 edge on the Dominican Republic!
Standings updated with all results to date.

Wow! The Netherlands takes the Dominican Republic down and Canada makes the US sweat. Good stuff.

Holy crap was that ever an intense three hours at the 'dome. Wow. What a game. What a crowd.

Australia! Who knew? Obviously owlhouse was giving them pointers before the game.

Jesus. I don't know whether to be happy (waves Southern Cross flag) or pissed off (looks at Confidence Pool standings).

I *think* FolkswaysSpitballers didn't understand the picking process and picked things in the opposite order. Either that, or they're looking for a top-to-bottom upset of the WBC!

That's just crazy. Did the DR just not take this tournament seriously or something? If that's the case, it's too bad as I think this is a pretty darned cool tournament.
posted by NoMich at 11:13 AM on March 11, 2009
I don't think you can fault the DR for that—at least, not their pitching staff. The two runs they gave up in the eleventh were their first earned runs of the tournament.

DR's lost has killed the last, slim hope of my picks performing well. Kudos to the Netherlands.

alas dfleming and owls are both correct (well no, but it sounded good to me) simply entered my picks in reverse, it was the 21yr old GlenliveT i swear.
The good Doctor informed me of my discression a while back and offered to reverse my reverse but i pretty much left it to him. Didn't think it fair to win when i was the one that fucked up in the first place.
posted by Folkways at 10:50 PM on March 13, 2009
Yep, I just haven't had the chance to reverse them until today. Will do so now.

boredom_08 has not only 3 points on YYM, but also has both Japan and Korea ranked higher than any other contenders, and has thus clinched our little championship. Congratulations!
